Chateau Petit Village has a rich history in the Pomerol appellation, dating back to at least 1785. The wines of Petit Village first gained recognition in 1831, when the estate was owned by the Dufresne family. Since then, the estate has changed hands several times. It wasn't until the end of the first decade of the 20th century that the vineyards and wines truly began to recover. A new chapter for Chateau Petit Village began when it was acquired by the major insurance group AXA in 1989. Under the AXA brand, improvements were made to the estate, including new vats and a new cellar for barrels. These renovations resulted in the most modern, architecturally impressive estate in the Pomerol appellation. In 2005, they hired Stéphane Derenoncourt as a consultant. In June 2020, Chateau Petit Village was sold to the Moulin family, owners of neighboring estate Chateau Beauregard. Today, Augustin Belloy from the family is in charge of the estate.
Located in the heart of Pomerol, on a beautiful clay-gravel plateau at an altitude of 35 to 38 meters, Chateau Petit Village is a 10.5 hectare vineyard. Its terroir consists of crushed gravel, composed of quartz and flint, on a clay subsoil. In Chateau Petit Village, each plot is planted with the appropriate grape variety according to its individual characteristics. Merlot dominates - 75%, followed by Cabernet Franc at 18% and Cabernet Sauvignon at 7%. The oldest plot of vines in Petit Village is a separate plot of Merlot, planted in 1947. The average vine density is 5,600 vines per hectare. Today, only organic viticulture methods are used in the vineyard, with plans to become officially certified organic soon.
The work of restructuring the vineyard and renovating the vat room and cellars is paying off. Chateau Petit Village produces around 2,500 cases of wine per year. They also have a second wine, Le Jardin de Petit Village. However, it is worth noting that starting with the 2021 harvest, production has been reduced by almost half due to a large-scale replanting of the vineyard
